SCW ORDER OF EVENTS
1. Script/storyboard is read/seen.
Who: Directors and DPs
The mentee director sends out the 3 page script/storyboard of the scene/dance. It is written to accommodate the given warehouse property and no sound.
2.. Design Meeting:
Who: Directors and DPs (both mentees and mentors) meet in person.
Where: cafe or restaraunt
What: The mentee director presents their script’s storyboard. THe production logistics and creative aspects are discussed. Learning moments present themselves and mentors guide with advice, anecdotes, and resources. At this meeting the team creates:
a. camera rehearsal (optional) date
b. a first draft of a gear list of grip and camera equipment
c. a crew list ( specifying staffing as needed for example-- steadicam op, dolly grip, etc)
d. a tech scout (and the 1st AD is invited to it) date.
e. Editors and colorists are discussed. Usually the group comes up with solutions or resources.
f. Communication methods are established based on mentor’s preferences. i.e. email or Slack? Zoom meetings or in person?
3. Camera rehearsal. optional
Who: same as design meeting.
Where: on location at warehouse
What: Director arrives with a shot list. DP and director mentees create an iPhone shot list. Mentees guide and advise.
4. Tech scout.
Who: Director, DP, and 1st AD (mentors and mentees) and sometimes gaffer or camera op.
Where: Warehouse
What: Participants discuss on site logistics, shot schedule, and shoot day schedule. Afterward, 1st AD and director mentees create schedule, guided by mentors if necessary.
5. Camera training and camera prep, if rentals ordered
WHo: camera dept, DPs, producer
Where: Koerner Camera in Fremont
What: crew learns how to use camera to be rented, and DPs prep camera settings, lenses, etc.
6. Equipment rental pick up / drop off
Who: various
Where: Pacific Grip and Electric and/or Koerner Camera
What: Producer picks up camera and grip equipment the Friday before the shoot and drops off equipment the following Monday.
7. Day of shoot.
Who: all crew
Where: warehouse
What: Working breakfast and coffee during load in. Safety meeting, crew introductions, and dress rehearsal of first scene for crew is lead by director. The shoot begins, led by 1st AD. Mentors pause for teaching moments as they come up during the day. Load out! Crew gathers at Loretta’s (optional).
8. Post production celebration dinner.
Traditionally, the director mentee organizes a post shoot dinner for the lead team, and the mentees pay for the mentors meal. The shoot is discussed based on learning and connections. Hallie forces everyone to do a short audio group recording where two lessons learned is discussed for the substack blog.
